The Dublin Painting and Sketching Club, 141st Annual Exhibition 29th April - 12th May 2019

This, our 141st Annual Exhibition, has special significance for the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club. Last year, after 19 years of exhibiting in Dun Laoghaire, we decided to return to the City centre. But we knew well that the City of Dublin and the world of Art had changed beyond recognition since the Club’s inaugural meeting, at a house in Westland Row, in 1874. The biggest challenge we faced was to find a relevant position for the Club in this new environment. A year later we believe that we’ve made a successful start...mainly due to the determination and hard work of our Committee and supportive members. A second positive factor was our discovery of the Liffey Corner gallery, at CHQ. It has proved to be an ideal location for our Exhibition. And, with the support of the CHQ management and staff, we have no doubt that 2019 will be even more successful than 2018. We also had the good fortune to be invited to join in the Port Perspectives Project, by Mr Eamonn O’Reilly, CEO of the Dublin Port Company. This led to our painting in the Port over many stimulating summer days. Our activity was filmed (and recently broadcast) by RTE’s Nationwide programme, bringing the work of the Club to a wider audience than ever before. The Club’s plein air painters will exhibit new work in the United Arts Club, next September. Thus, the Club is now offering three exhibitions per year We are also pleased that in 2018, eleven talented artists were welcomed as new members. All had submitted work on a number of occasions through our Open Submissions Programme. And this year the same programmes has provided attractive paintings from other non-members. The Club’s exceptional longevity has grown from this – a special ability to combine the old with the new, cherishing our traditions while always seeking innovation. Welcome
